A greenside bunker on the Pine Nine, the green rising beyond it to a white flag beneath Scots pine

ThePine Nine

Nine holes through the old pinewood, laid out in 1931 and played most often in the last of the light.

The Pine Nine was built by the club's head greenkeeper, Walter Pryce, in the pinewood west of the clubhouse, on land too sheltered for heather and too beautiful to leave alone. It is shorter than the Heath Course and more intimate, with greens tucked into clearings and fairways carpeted at their edges with pine needles.

Members play it after work, with their children or when there is time for nine and not eighteen. It is where the Academy's juniors play their first rounds, and where a good many members would happily play their last.
